About this rug

A cream diamond medallion outlined in green makes this a wonderful rug. Across a deep red field, small flowers in teal, ochre and blue scatter around a splendid central diamond medallion. This cream medallion is outlined in green, holds a red core and ends in narrow points at top and bottom. Cream figures with jagged green edges fill the top and bottom of the field, framing the center. An ochre band edged with tiny dots sits inside a wider gray brown border dotted with red. A narrow red stripe runs along the outer edge. The pile is full across the whole surface. It suits a small space where the red and green need to stay bright. At 1'6" by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the strong red ground of the region. Its compact size gathers the medallion layout into a small accent piece.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
