Three geometric medallions make up the central column of this delightful rug. Worked on a deep red field, graceful scrolling vines in olive and steel blue surround a central column of three geometric medallions. The middle shape is a notched lozenge with a blue core, linked by small bars to diamond forms above and below. Handsome blue spandrels in each corner hold pink blossoms and curling leaves against the red ground. A cream main border carries a chain of small red and blue rosettes, set between narrow ochre and near-black stripes. The pile is full. It grounds a small entry or reading nook, where the bright blue accents lift the heavy red field. At 1'9" by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece retains that village spirit through bold geometric medallions and sharp contrast between near-black outlines and the red field. The cream border frames the dense floral drawing with a lighter band of small repeating shapes.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
