This remarkable rug has a stepped ivory medallion on a deep red field. Over a deep red field, a beautiful stepped ivory medallion holds small rosettes in navy and red around a central hexagon. Small notched marks sit above and below the medallion. Ivory corners with pretty navy floral motifs fill the four corners of the red ground. The main border is navy, carrying geometric motifs in red and light blue, framed by guard stripes of ivory with small navy and red squares. Full pile covers the face and the borders. The dense drawing keeps the red, navy and ivory distinct in this small format. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps the strong contrast and the geometric medallion. Its compact size and bold red field make it a distinct accent piece.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
