About this rug

A central flowering tree rises on the deep red field of this delightful rug. Worked on a deep red field, a central flowering tree rises in cream, pink and orange, flanked by leaping orange animals and dark blue leaf sprays. Cream spandrels with jagged edges fill the two corners along one long side, holding small floral forms in pink and gray. The beautiful main border is navy, carrying a chain of small orange and pink motifs linked by delicate pale vines. Pile covers the face fully, and a few small flowers and blossoms dot the cream corners. It grounds a small space, letting the orange figures stand out against the red. At 2' by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This rug is small and shows bold animal figures on a strong red ground. The navy border frames the bright orange creatures and the central tree, setting a clear edge around the busy field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
