This wonderful rug has a diamond medallion with a pink core. Stylized deer, white birds and small blossoms fill the deep red field around a central diamond medallion. The medallion holds a cream ground with a pink core, framed by a jagged navy outline. No corner spandrels break the red ground, letting the animal figures stand clear at either end. A gorgeous brown main border carries a scrolling vine in sage and pink, flanked by narrow guard stripes dotted with blue and red marks. Full pile covers the face and borders. It settles the bright pink and navy accents against the warm red ground. At 1'9" by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. Here the red ground is strong and even. The stylized deer and birds rest directly on the red, enclosed by the brown border.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
