The large stepped diamond medallion of this amazing rug has a dark green center. The deep red field holds a large stepped diamond medallion in light blue, teal and cream, with a dark green center. Below the medallion, small rosettes on thin stems rise from the lower border area. Zigzag bands in cream, teal and light blue close the top and bottom of the field. A handsome cream main border carries small geometric blocks in teal, navy and red, framed by narrow guard stripes in light blue and cream. The pile is full across the entire surface. It holds a bright spot of color on a dark floor, the blue and teal cooling the strong red ground. At 2' by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This small piece keeps the bold geometric drawing and strong color contrast found in those longer weavings. The stepped medallion and zigzag bands sit hard against the red field, giving the compact layout a clear, graphic look.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
