A large eight-pointed star medallion in cream sits in the middle of this remarkable rug. Across a burgundy field, pretty geometric rosettes and small hooked shapes scatter in cream, teal and orange around the center. A large eight-pointed star medallion sits in the middle, worked in cream with teal outlines and a red and brown core. Splendid cream spandrels with teal outlines fill the four corners of the field. The main border runs smoke gray, carrying small round motifs in dark blue, red and orange. The pile is full throughout. It brings a warm red note to a tight spot, and the cream star brightens the burgundy ground. At 2'2" by 3', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece retains the angular drawing and sharp color shifts seen in those longer formats. The burgundy field holds many small motifs around the central star, and the gray band encloses the pattern with a steady line.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
