Cream rosettes and curled vines surround the central diamond of this remarkable rug. Charming curled vines and cream rosettes cover the navy field, set around a central diamond medallion. The medallion holds a cream ground with a small red flower at its core, and short pendants reach toward the top and bottom. Green and red work fills the four corners of the field. A handsome cream main border carries a scroll of small red and dark leaves and geometric shapes, with a red outer edge. Narrow cream and navy stripes run along both sides of the frame. The pile is full across the rug. It holds the navy and red close together in a small patch of floor. At 1'8" by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. Western Persian Hamedan draws on a wide ring of villages, and its rugs have reached the city markets for generations. This piece shows sharp outlines and high contrast. The navy field centers one diamond shape, framed by a wide cream border filled with red and dark vines.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
