About this rug

A central ivory diamond medallion sits on the navy field of this remarkable rug. Set within a navy field, pretty deep red vines and cream rosettes curl around a central ivory diamond medallion. The medallion holds a small near-black flower at its core, flanked by gold accents on either side. No corner spandrels break the continuous floral pattern that fills the rectangular space. A wide camel border carries a row of delicate teal and rust leaves, framed by narrow guard stripes in red and navy. The pile is full across the face, keeping the drawing sharp and the colors distinct. It anchors the deep red and navy tones in a compact floral layout. At 1'10" by 3'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This piece keeps the open spacing of the type, with large rosettes floating on the navy ground. The deep red and navy contrast gives the floral drawing a clear presence in a small format.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
