Two mirrored figures in deep red robes make this an amazing rug. The navy field holds two mirrored figures in deep red robes, each holding a small cup. Delicate sprays of muted pink and red blossoms stand between and beside them. The pictorial design fills the ground from edge to edge with no central medallion. A handsome cream main border frames the scene, carrying a row of burgundy rosettes and small diamonds. Full pile covers the figures and the border. The deep red robes stand out sharply against the navy ground. At 1'10" by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shahreza rugs
Shahreza lies south of Isfahan in central Persia and is also known by its older name, Qumsheh. In 1597 to 1598 Shah Abbas I moved the Safavid capital to Isfahan, the city that gives Shahreza’s province its name. To revive the economy, Shah Abbas increased carpet and textile production in the state workshops. The weaving takes the floral vocabulary of the Isfahan district and works it at village scale, with simpler drawing and a warmer, less formal palette. This rug keeps that village scale in the two figures and the small floral sprays around them. The bold layout sets the robes hard against the navy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
