This charming rug has a cream medallion with rose blossoms on a navy field. On a navy field cut in lobes, a cream medallion holds dainty rose blossoms and pale green leaves. Notched pendants reach out from its top and base. Cream ground with graceful scrolling vines and small rose flowers and curling leaves fills the corners around the navy center. The border runs navy scrolls across a cream ground. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The cream edge lightens the navy center so the small space stays balanced. At 2' by 3'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. Its weavers tie their knots with a small hooked knife instead of their fingers, and have been timed at faster than one knot a second. Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Centered medallions and borders that turn cleanly at the corners are the marks of Tabriz work. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean corner turns. Its palette pairs the navy ground with cream, rose and pale green.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
