Five hexagonal medallions linked by narrow striped bars run down this remarkable rug. The navy field carries a vertical column of five hexagonal medallions linked by narrow striped bars. Each splendid medallion holds a deep red core set within cream and ochre geometric bands. Large cream triangles point inward from the sides, breaking the navy ground between the central figures. A wide cream border surrounds the field, filled with small diamond shapes in red, ochre, green and gray. Narrow guard stripes with multicolor chevrons frame this main band on both sides. The pile is full across the face and the borders. It holds a strong graphic line, where the bright cream border lifts the navy ground. At 1'10" by 2'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This piece keeps that small, portable scale and a deep navy ground. The repeating hexagons and the cream border with its small diamonds show the geometric vocabulary clearly.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
