Curling vines form a continuous lattice across this amazing rug. Small flower heads and curling vines cover the navy field in a repeating grid. Dainty red rosettes with blue centers alternate with brown blossoms and cream stars, all linked by thin gold lines. There is no central medallion, only the continuous lattice stretching from edge to edge. A narrow blue border carries a row of tiny red and cream flowers. The pile is full across the face, with every color distinct and clear. The dense drawing holds the navy ground and the bright blooms in balance. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Varamin rugs
In the years around 1300 to 1350 the Ilkhanid rulers, newly converted to Islam, built mosques and shrines in Persian cities, Varamin among them. Varamin sits southeast of Tehran on the edge of the central plateau, and it is known for one thing above all: the minakhani lattice. That is a repeating grid of small flower heads covering the whole field. This rug keeps that grid, with the flower heads set hard against the navy ground. The red and cream notes stand out clearly, and the gold vines tie the pattern together without crowding the space.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
