Three hexagonal figures in cream and deep red form a column through this wonderful rug. The navy field holds a vertical column of three hexagonal figures worked in cream and deep red. Small stepped triangles in cream point inward from the sides of this navy ground. A wide cream border surrounds the center, filled with a handsome lattice of small blue and red geometric forms. Narrow guard stripes of gold and deep red frame the field on each edge. The pile is full over the face and borders alike. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This piece keeps that small format, setting the cream hexagons against the navy ground. The repeating figures run down the length, holding the geometric rhythm clear within the cream border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
