About this rug

Boteh in sage and smoke gray alternate with bands of rosettes on this charming rug. Worked on a burgundy field, rows of boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, in sage and smoke gray alternate with bands of small dusty rose rosettes. The design is an all-over repeat with no central medallion. A narrow near-black binding edges the rug, with no wide border or guard stripes. A few patches have thinned, and specks of white show across the burgundy ground. Deep red and sage meet within this small format. At 2'8" by 3'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions sit properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that order in its strict rows of motifs, though it leaves the medallion aside for an all-over repeat. The sage and smoke gray notes set against the burgundy ground give the small piece a steady look.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
