About this rug

A large ivory medallion with a stepped outline holds the center of this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, ivory geometric shapes and near-black lines form a dense pattern around the center. A large ivory medallion with a stepped outline and a red core anchors the middle of the rug. Ivory shapes sit in each corner with jagged forms that mirror the central one. The splendid main border is cream, carrying near-black abstract motifs and small red flowers. Narrow brown and near-black stripes edge the cream band on both sides. Full pile covers the surface, keeping every hue sharp and clear. It brings a strong graphic quality to a small space with its high contrast of red and ivory. At 2'5" by 4'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Alexander the Great gathered the Persian treasure and left it at Ecbatana, now Hamedan, in the keeping of his chief treasurer Harpalus. His closest friend Hephaestion died there in the autumn of 324 BCE. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This accent rug shows the geometric character of the region in its stepped medallion and angular corner shapes. The deep red ground gives a bold backdrop for the ivory drawing, creating a sharp rhythm across the short length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
