About this rug

This amazing rug has a diamond medallion with a cream core. Dainty curled vines and small blossoms in cream, sage and navy cover the deep red field. A central diamond medallion holds a cream core with near-black outlines, sending notched pendants vertically into the ground. Large spandrels in sage and gray brown fill the four corners with pretty scrolling leaves. The main border carries a chain of rust and orange rosettes between near-black guard stripes. A narrow cream stripe with a near-black vine runs inside the wide band. Full pile covers the whole rug. It holds a warm note in a tight spot, and the sage corners cool the red ground. At 2'1" by 3'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps the district’s strong contrast, with light motifs set hard against the deep red ground. The dense floral drawing fills the small format completely, with the cream medallion drawing the eye to the center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
