About this rug

A stepped diamond with a near-black core sits at the heart of this amazing rug. Dainty angular vines and tiny flowers in cream, gray brown and near-black surround a central figure on a deep red field. A stepped diamond sits at the middle with a near-black core, framed by a serrated cream edge. Large gray beige corner pieces fill the four ends, each holding near-black angular motifs against the red ground. The main border is near-black, carrying a red wavy line and small geometric forms. Narrow guard stripes in cream and red edge this wide band on either side. The pile is full over the whole surface. Cream details lighten the heavy red of this bold geometric accent. At 2' by 3'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece keeps the intense red ground and angular drawing of the longer village pieces. Its layout places a near-black stepped center against the bright field, balancing the dense motifs with open space at the corners.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
