This lovely rug has a navy diamond medallion with a stepped outline. Small geometric diamonds and hooked motifs in green, ochre and cream form rows over the deep red ground, around a central figure. A navy diamond medallion with a stepped outline and a near-black core anchors the middle of the rug. A splendid cream main border holds abstract shapes in tan, blue and pink, framed by thin guard stripes in navy and red. The pile is full from the field to the border. The navy center cools the warm red ground, making this a bright geometric piece for the floor. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This accent piece keeps the strong angular style of the region, with stepped outlines and hard color blocks. Its compact size gathers the vivid drawing into a short span, without the reach of a corridor piece.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
