A central diamond medallion holds a pink rosette core within cream scrolls on this lovely rug. Small floral sprays in steel blue, cream and muted pink scatter across the deep red field. A beautiful central diamond medallion holds a pink rosette core within cream scrolls, with short pendants above and below. Steel blue spandrels fill the four corners, each carrying clusters of cream and gold blossoms against the red ground. The main border runs near-black, set with a charming repeating vine of dusty rose and cream flowers. Narrow guard stripes in cream and dark blue frame this outer band on both sides. The pile reads full on both field and border. The meeting of deep red and cool blue makes a bright accent. At 2'2" by 3'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece shows a prominent center figure on a deep red ground. The steel blue corners give a sharp contrast to the saturated field and lighten the middle design with airy floral clusters.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
