About this rug

This delightful rug has a central medallion filled with cream boteh shapes. The deep red field holds a central medallion filled with cream boteh shapes, the paisley leaf-drop. Beautiful notched pendants extend from the top and bottom of this core, reaching toward small rosettes in blue and muted pink. Spandrels at the four corners mirror the center, carrying large cream scrolls against the red ground. A steel blue main border displays linked geometric figures in olive and pink, edged by tan bands with small red diamonds. The pile is low and worn in parts of the red field, most clearly along the left side. The medallion stands out boldly against the bright red surround. At 2'4" by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean corner turns, with the border framing the field precisely. The medallion contrasts sharply with the red ground, while the blue border contains the busy floral motifs.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
