This amazing rug has an ivory medallion with a lobed outline. Worked on a deep red field, charming scrolling vines and small blossoms in teal, violet and ochre surround a central shape. An ivory medallion with a lobed outline holds a red rosette at its core, framed by smoke gray and brown details. Large tan motifs shaped like birds or leaves anchor the four corners of the field. The splendid main border is ivory, carrying a chain of small flowers in red and dark blue. A narrow guard stripe in smoke gray separates the border from the field. The pile is full across the face. In a tight spot, the violet and teal notes stand out against the red ground. At 2'4" by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Bijar rugs
The story goes that during the Timurid invasions a body of Torkaman followed the conqueror west and settled around Bijar. Bijar weavers made a remarkable number of vagirehs, sample pieces showing portions of several patterns and borders, used as models for large carpets. Bijar in Kurdistan has long been called the iron rug of Persia. Its designs are tightly ordered. This rug keeps that order in its central medallion and four corner pieces, even where the drawing turns to vine and blossom. The deep red ground holds firm around the ivory center, with teal and violet flowers scattered through it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
