A cream and brown cross medallion makes this a remarkable rug. On a deep red field, a central cream and brown cross medallion anchors a vertical blue stem with stylized branches. Small geometric rosettes in gold and blue float in the open red ground around the main shape. Abstract orange and brown forms stand in the field corners. A handsome dark burgundy main border carries a row of small flower heads in blue, orange and gold. Diagonal guard stripes in cream, red and blue frame this band on both sides. The pile is full from edge to edge. The bright blue and orange accents stand out against the red. At 2'2" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also spelled Karaja, is a village district in northwestern Persia, north of Heriz. Its work leans on bold geometric drawing and strong contrast. This rug keeps both. The single cross medallion sits on a saturated red ground, framed by the diagonal stripe guards that run around the edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
