About this rug

A large stepped diamond medallion holds the middle of this remarkable rug. A deep red field holds a large stepped diamond medallion on a dark blue ground. Gold and pink geometric forms fill the center, while small pendants extend from the top and bottom points. Gorgeous dark blue corner pieces with gold motifs occupy the four corners of the rug. A cream main border carries delicate brown rosettes and scrolling vines around the perimeter. Thin guard bands with brown and blue figures line the field edges. The pile reads full on both field and border. It brings a bold graphic accent to a compact area, and the dark blue center cools the warm red ground. At 2'2" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan lies in northern Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. The designs are the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This rug shows that angular drawing in its stepped diamond form and angular borders. The dark blue medallion stands out against the surrounding red field, creating a strong visual anchor within the small format.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
