Three large diamond medallions run down the deep red ground of this wonderful rug. Three large diamond medallions run down the deep red field, each holding a navy cross and cream hooks, with smaller ochre and navy shapes between them. The main border carries rows of small octagonal figures in ochre, cream and navy on a red ground. Narrow guard stripes with small zigzags run along both edges of it. The pile is full on the field and the borders. Bright ochre notes lift the heavy red ground of this small rug. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid along the edges, where the pattern repeats without change. The field shifts between deep red and brick as you move past it, set against the dark navy outlines.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
