Two large octagonal medallions run in a column down this amazing rug. Set within a deep red field, two large octagonal medallions sit in a vertical column, linked by a central geometric panel. Each holds a navy diamond core outlined in tan and cream against the red ground. Small navy hooks and cream accents fill the spaces between the main figures. The main border is tan, carrying a repeating navy geometric pattern with small red details. A narrow olive guard stripe edges the border on the inside. Full pile covers the face. The dense drawing holds the eye close, letting the red and navy shapes stand out clearly. At 1'8" by 2'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated with almost no variation. Because the drawing hardly changes, much of the life is in the color. This rug keeps that disciplined geometry in its two stacked medallions and the rigid pattern of the border. The deep red field stays strong against the navy and tan details.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
