Rows of stepped gul motifs repeat across this remarkable rug. Worked on a deep red field, rows of gorgeous stepped gul motifs repeat in a strict grid. Each octagonal figure holds a cream and brown center, while smaller diamond shapes fill the spaces between the main columns. The splendid dark brown border carries a geometric lattice of cream and rust, framed by narrow guard stripes with small repeating figures. Full pile covers the entire surface. It brings a strong geometric rhythm to a small space, the cream accents brightening the saturated ground. At 3'1" by 1'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that rigid structure, setting the hooked figures against the open ground. Dark brown and cream mix around the red field, keeping the palette grounded.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
