Cream and black diamond guls alternate with smaller figures on this remarkable rug. Over a deep red field, rows of diamond guls in cream and black alternate with smaller geometric figures down the center. No single medallion anchors the design, as the repeat runs the full length of the ground. A beautiful border in red and black frames the field, carrying small cream and black marks. Thin stripes with small cream diamonds flank the wide border band. The pile is full throughout. It brings a bold graphic rhythm to a compact floor space, where the bright cream details stand out against the saturated red ground. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. The guls sit in staggered columns on this rug. The saturated red ground gives the cream and black drawing a crisp edge.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
