Two stepped diamond medallions sit in a vertical column on this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, two large stepped diamond medallions sit in a vertical column, flanked by half-guls at the sides. Each medallion holds a small geometric core in cream and dark blue. The main border is muted pink, carrying a row of dark red and dark blue geometric figures. Narrow guard stripes in dark blue and red frame this wide band on both sides. The pile is full over the rug and within each stripe. The dense drawing holds the eye with its sharp contrast between the bright red ground and the cream motifs. At 2'2" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, but it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. Here the two stacked diamonds carry that grid, and the pale pink border lifts the red ground without competing with it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
