About this rug

Three diamond guls sit in a column on the olive panel of this delightful rug. On a deep red field, an olive panel holds a column of three diamond guls worked in cream, black and rust. The olive ground follows the outline of the three emblems, which gives the panel a scalloped edge. The wide border carries rows of small geometric figures in rust, orange and cream on the same deep red ground. Narrow guard stripes with tiny repeating marks edge the central panel on every side. The face shows a full pile throughout, so the geometric lines stay sharp and the colors distinct. It suits a small space where the strong contrast between the red frame and the green center can stand alone. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict repetition in its three central shapes. The olive panel sets the red guls apart from the surrounding border, creating a sharp block of color in the middle of the weave.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
