Three octagonal gul motifs repeat in a column on this delightful rug. On a deep red field, a column of three octagonal gul motifs repeats in ochre, navy and cream. Small geometric figures sit in the red ground around them. The wide border is ochre, with a chain of navy and cream geometric shapes, and thin navy and red guard stripes run along both sides. The pile is full across the entire rug. The dense drawing holds the warm red and bright ochre in a fixed, rhythmic layout. At 2'4" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of octagonal figures. The bright ochre border frames the deep red field and sets the warm colors against the navy outlines.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
