A diamond medallion of rosettes holds the center of this remarkable rug. At the center, a diamond medallion of cream, navy and red rosettes sits on a deep red field. A lobed frame of green vine and cream scroll surrounds this core, separating it from the charming floral corners worked in steel blue and burgundy. The gorgeous main border is cream, carrying a chain of red and navy blossoms linked by near-black stems. Thin stripes of small shapes in red and navy edge this band on both sides. The pile is full across the face. At 2'4" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field as the shared character. This rug keeps the floral drawing of the district but gathers it into a central medallion. The steel blue corners and cream border frame the deep red field with a clear outline.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
