About this rug

The two large stepped medallions of this remarkable rug hold checkered diamond cores. Set within a deep red field, two large stepped medallions hold checkered diamond cores and small rosettes. Navy shapes with jagged cream edges surround the central red forms, creating a bold geometric contrast across the face. A splendid red inner border carries a scroll of hooked motifs and small leaves. Outside it, a wider band of dark green holds a row of pretty multicolor flower heads, framed by narrow guard stripes. The pile is full, and the angular lines stay sharp and distinct. It suits a small space where the red and navy can stand out clearly. At 3'5" by 2', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This rug keeps that angular vocabulary in its stepped medallions and the hooked shapes running through the border. The deep red field and navy accents sit hard against the cream outlines, giving the small piece a strong graphic presence.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
