This delightful rug has a column of three stepped geometric figures on a deep red field. The deep red field holds a column of three stepped geometric figures, the center one cream and the others navy. Navy hooks outline each shape against the red ground. The main border is cream, carrying a row of cross motifs in red, navy, ochre and pale blue. Narrow navy guard stripes with small light dots frame the cream band on each side. The pile is full over the whole face. The dense drawing keeps the red, cream and navy distinct in a small space. At 2'2" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ghoochan rugs
Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. In the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, Ghoochan shows that closeness in its weaving. Its rugs carry the repeating geometric figures of the northeast, not the curves of the Persian center, in red and dark blue. This piece keeps those repeating geometric figures in its column of stepped shapes. The red and dark blue are set hard against the cream border, with small touches of ochre and pale blue in the cross motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
