About this rug

A large cream medallion with pendants stands against the deep red field of this remarkable rug. Set in a deep red field, a large cream medallion with pendants holds a graceful blue rosette and scrolling vines. Cream spandrels at the four corners carry dainty matching floral sprays and small blue accents against the red ground. The main border is sage, set with a repeat of small flower heads and curling leaves. The pile is full throughout. The dense drawing keeps the bright cream and blue details sharp against the warm red ground. At 2'3" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This rug keeps that floral character in its scrolling vines and leaf forms. The layout gathers the drawing into a central medallion and corner pieces rather than spreading it across the whole ground, while the sage border frames the deep red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
