A star medallion in navy and cream makes this a delightful rug. A deep red field shows a gorgeous central star medallion in navy and cream, flanked by two smaller navy diamonds. Small sage leaves and cream blossoms scatter across the open ground around these shapes. A beautiful pale blue border runs around the field, carrying small pink rosettes and framed by thin gold lines. The outer edge repeats a row of cream and pink tabs on the red ground. The pile is full from center to edge. The dense drawing holds the eye, letting the bright navy and sage notes stand out against the warm red ground. At 3'3" by 2'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for their saturated madder reds. This piece keeps that saturated red ground and the central medallion layout. The navy diamonds flanking the center add a strong contrast to the warm field, while the pale blue border cools the edge.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
