The stepped navy medallion of this amazing rug has an ivory core. The deep red field holds a dense scatter of pretty curling vines, palmettes and small flower heads in gold, cream and steel blue. A handsome stepped navy medallion anchors the middle, its ivory core set with a small blue cross, and short pendants reach toward the top and bottom. Navy spandrels fill the four corners, each carrying a large cream and red blossom. The wide frame uses a cream ground, set with a chain of small red and blue rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in orange and navy flank this edge. The pile is full across most of the face, with a low, worn patch in the lower left of the red field. At 2'4" by 3'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds. This rug keeps that formal layout, with the stepped medallion, corner spandrels and scrolling vine all present on a strong red ground. The cream border frames the red center with a fine line of small blossoms.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
