Geometric blossoms sit in two columns of stylized vases on this charming rug. Set in a deep red field, two columns of stylized vases hold dainty geometric blossoms in cream, gold and dark green. Three vertical bands of black and red serrated lines run the length of the rug between and beside the columns. The gorgeous main border is green, carrying a chain of small cream and red diamonds, with narrow guard stripes of black marks on red on either side. A few patches show wear, with small white specks where the foundation appears. It brings a warm, tribal rhythm to a small space, grounding the eye with its bold red and near-black accents. At 2'4" by 3'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The looms were portable, so the formats stay small and the designs repeat a few motifs carried from camp to camp. Here a single vase motif repeats down both columns of the deep red field, set against near-black lines and touches of green.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
