Stepped diamonds and rectangles sit in the red panels of this charming rug. Deep red covers the ground of the field, which divides into panels holding stepped diamonds and rectangles in dark brown and near-black. A column of these geometric shapes runs down the center, flanked by rows of small cross motifs. The main border is dark brown with a repeating angular scroll, set inside a band of small crosses. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler in a few patches. In a corner, the geometric drawing gives the floor some weight. At 2'6" by 4'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that small format and the repeated geometric vocabulary, with stepped diamonds and cross shapes filling the panels. The deep red field and dark brown border keep the palette warm and contained.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
