The cream diamond medallion of this remarkable rug holds two red motifs. Deep red fills the field, where rows of small boteh figures appear in cream, ochre and rust. A central cream diamond medallion holds two larger red motifs and blue rosettes within an ochre frame. Cream spandrels at the four corners carry small red forms, separated from the field by diagonal ochre bands. A beautiful dark blue border edges the field, with narrow rust and ochre stripes inside it. The face is covered by a full pile, keeping the drawing sharp. It holds the warm red ground and the cool blue border in balance. At 2'4" by 4'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Botteh rugs
The boteh, mostly known now as the paisley, is an ancient Persian design based on the tree of life and inspired by buds, cones and palm fronds. Botteh is a motif, the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. The boteh is the organizing figure of rugs cataloged this way, repeated across the field in rows. It appears everywhere from the tribal south to the city workshops of the center. This rug keeps that repeating figure in the red ground, with the small shapes set in rows around the central diamond. The cream medallion and corners break the red field with a lighter tone, while the dark blue border frames the whole composition.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
