About this rug

Scrolling vines carry blue leaves across the deep red ground of this delightful rug. Worked on a deep red field, pretty scrolling vines carry blue leaves and small cream blossoms across the ground. No corner pieces interrupt the continuous vine pattern that fills the space. The main border is cream, carrying charming stylized flowers in red, blue and olive green. Narrow guard stripes in dark blue edge this frame. The pile is full, and the fine floral detail stays sharp. It holds the saturated red and cool blue together in a compact format. At 2'2" by 4'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sarouk rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Sarouk sits in the Arak district of central Persia and gave its name to one of the most exported Persian rugs of the twentieth century. The type has a floral field, usually on rose or deep madder, worked in curves. This rug keeps that curved floral drawing on a saturated red ground. The dark blue leaves and cream border contrast sharply with the warm field, creating a dense pattern within a small accent size.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
