A navy diamond medallion with a cream star core makes this an amazing rug. Deep red fills the field, which is crowded with delicate curling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in cream, steel blue and olive. A gorgeous navy diamond medallion sits at the center, holding a cream star core and sending short pendants up and down. Navy spandrels fill the four corners of the field, mirroring the floral drawing inside the medallion. The main border is navy, set with large cream rosettes and scrolling leaves. Thin guard bands in cream and red frame the border on both sides. The pile is full. The dark blue frame holds the bright red center in check across this compact piece. At 2'5" by 3'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. UNESCO lists the carpet weaving of Kashan as living heritage, noting that almost one in three residents works in carpet making and that most of the makers are women. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This piece keeps that formal layout, with the medallion and corners clearly defined against the red ground. The red reads strong across the face, while the navy border and spandrels give the dense floral pattern a navy edge.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
