This charming rug has two large hexagonal medallions on a field of deep red. On a field of deep red, two large hexagonal medallions stack vertically, each holding a cross of cream, red and blue. Small pale rosettes sit in the space between the medallions. Splendid angular spandrels at the four corners carry blocky motifs in navy and brown against the red ground. The main border is dark brown, filled with a dense pattern of small cream and blue shapes. Narrow stripes with zigzag lines in cream and red edge the border. The pile is low in places across the field, and the red reads paler in the center. The rug’s warm, earthy tone suits a corner. At 2'2" by 3'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the stacked medallion layout seen in the region. The red base sets off the navy medallion centers and the brown frame.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
