Repeating columns of stylized figures make this a lovely rug. Columns of stylized figures in cream, tan and near-black stand against the deep red field. No central medallion sits here, only these repeating vertical motifs worked across the open ground, each with small hooked arms and a tiny diamond at its head. A thin near-black line binds the edge in place of a wide border. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows in pale patches between the figures. The warm red ground and geometric drawing suit a small entry. At 2'7" by 4', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ferdos rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. Its rugs tend toward repeating fields instead of one dominant medallion, often on madder red and indigo. This piece keeps that repeating field layout, filling the ground with vertical motifs rather than a single center. The drawing here turns more angular, using cream and tan against the deep red without any blue notes.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
