A lobed dark blue medallion sits against the deep red of this wonderful rug. Across a deep red field, a lobed dark blue medallion holds a small red core at its center. Small palmettes extend from the top and bottom of the central shape into the open red space. Cream spandrels occupy each corner with delicate floral sprays in green, red and blue. The main border runs dark blue, carrying red flower heads and green leaves. Full pile covers every part of the face. It holds a bright note of color in a small space where the red stays vivid near the eye. At 2'4" by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions sit properly centered and borders turn cleanly at the corners. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean turn of the border at each corner. The dark blue border sets the red field and the cream corners against one another with clear separation.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
