About this rug

Geometric guls in gold and gray pink run in rows over this remarkable rug. Rows of small geometric guls in gold and gray pink run over the deep red ground, with dark green crosses between them. The layout is an all-over repeat with no central medallion, the motifs spaced evenly over the red ground. A cream main border carries a beautiful lattice of linked diamonds, edged by narrow guard stripes in burgundy and dark green. The pile is full. Gold notes stand out against the red, forming a bright patch of color on a dark floor. At 2'11" by 1'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of guls, the gold and gray pink shapes standing out against the red. The cream lattice border frames the field with a steady geometric line that matches the order of the motifs inside.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
