About this rug

A cream rosette with a red core makes this a delightful rug. The deep red field holds a dense floral drawing of delicate ivory leaves and small blossoms in pink, blue and gold. A central medallion forms a cream rosette with a red core, sending pendants up and down the length. Near-black spandrels at the four corners carry large flower heads in pink and blue. The main border is near-black, set with a charming vine of red and gold blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in cream and pink frame the near-black band on the inner side. The pile is full over the face and borders alike. The cream leaves lighten the red, making this small rug easy to place. At 2'2" by 3'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lilihan rugs

The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Lilihan is a village in the Arak district of central Persia, and its weaving is close kin to Sarouk. The field is floral, often on a rose or madder ground, and worked in curved lines rather than angles. This rug keeps that floral field and the curved line, with leaves and blossoms scrolling across the red ground. The near-black border sets a near-black frame around the bright center, and the cream medallion draws the eye to the middle.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
