Rows of octagonal guls and smaller diamond figures repeat across this delightful rug. Deep red covers the whole field, holding rows of octagonal guls in cream and brown with smaller diamond figures between them. The grid repeats evenly from end to end. Wide border bands of diagonal stripes in cream, brown and black frame the center. Narrow stripes of small zigzag marks edge the main band. The pile is full over the entire surface. This warm block of color suits a compact spot. At 4'1" by 2'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers set one octagonal gul figure in a strict repeating grid across the field, with almost no variation. Since the figures never vary, the red carries the interest. This piece maintains that rigid layout, with identical forms arranged in steady columns. The red ground holds its strength over the whole surface.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
