Small gray brown boteh motifs repeat densely across this lovely rug. Small gray brown boteh motifs outlined in near-black repeat densely across the burgundy field. The design runs as a gorgeous all-over lattice with no central medallion or corner spandrels to break the pattern. A plain near-black band frames the drawing at the edges without any guard stripes. The pile is low in places across the center, and pale patches show the foundation. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. It adds a warm burgundy note to a small space without filling it. At 2'3" by 4'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This rug keeps that all-over layout and the limited range of red, brown and black. The small hooked shapes repeat across the burgundy ground in a steady grid, framed only by the near-black edge.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
