A navy diamond medallion holds a cluster of pink rosettes on this charming rug. The deep red field is filled with graceful scrolling vines, palmettes and small flower heads in steel blue, cream and olive. A splendid central diamond medallion in navy holds salmon pink rosettes with blue and cream centers, flanked by large cream scrolls that curve inward from the sides. Pale spandrels at the corners carry leaf motifs against the red. The main border runs steel blue with a vine scroll in cream and rust, framed by narrow guard stripes. The pile is low in places over the face, and the red reads paler where the weave shows through. It grounds a small space, letting the steel blue cool the warm red. At 2'7" by 4'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. This rug follows the classic medallion-and-corners layout, with a central diamond and matching spandrels framing the field. The scrolling vine and palmette fill the open ground between the center and the border. Steel blue and cream set against the deep red give the drawing clear contrast.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
